Tamarindo is an ideal first stop for settling into the coastal atmosphere. Its wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and activities makes it easy to spend one or two nights here before continuing toward less crowded areas.
The beach is well known for its surfing conditions, but it also offers pleasant seaside walks and sunsets that are best enjoyed without rushing. Although the drive from the airport is relatively straightforward, it is advisable to travel during daylight hours, especially on your first day. Distances in Costa Rica may appear short on a map, but traffic, winding roads, and weather conditions can increase travel times.
From Tamarindo to Flamingo: A Short Drive to Enjoy at a Relaxed Pace
Playa Flamingo is located approximately 21 kilometers from Tamarindo. The drive can take around 35 minutes, although it is worth allowing additional time if you would like to stop in Brasilito or explore the area around Playa Conchal.

This section of the route crosses the interior of the Nicoya Peninsula. One of the most practical options is to travel toward Santa Cruz and Nicoya using the main roads. Although some coastal roads may appear more direct, they are not always the quickest or easiest option, particularly during the rainy season.
Nicoya is a convenient intermediate stop where you can enjoy traditional Costa Rican food and stock up on water or fuel. It is also possible to take a detour toward communities such as Sámara, although doing so usually requires adding at least one overnight stay to avoid turning the day into a race against the clock.
Cóbano serves as a connection point for several destinations in the southern part of the peninsula. Roads from here lead to Montezuma, Tambor, Santa Teresa, and Malpaís. Ferry schedules may change, so they should be verified directly before traveling. It is also advisable to arrive early, particularly on weekends, during holidays, and throughout the high season.
Puntarenas deserves more than simply waiting to board the ferry. You can walk along Paseo de los Turistas, try a traditional vigorón, or enjoy an ice cream while overlooking the gulf. For travelers who prefer a more relaxed itinerary, spending a night in the city makes it possible to take an early ferry the following morning.
From Puntarenas to Jacó: An Easy Route Along the Central Pacific
Another option is to continue from Puntarenas to Jacó. The driving distance is approximately 71 kilometers, and the journey generally takes around one and a half hours.
This is one of the easiest stages of the itinerary. The route connects with the Costanera Sur highway and provides access to destinations such as the Tárcoles River, Playa Herradura, and Jacó.
In Tárcoles, some travelers stop at the bridge over the river to observe crocodiles. Anyone choosing to stop should park only in an authorized area and should never leave visible belongings inside the vehicle.
Jacó offers a combination of beach, restaurants, shops, and activities. It is also a convenient base for visiting Playa Hermosa or continuing farther south along the Pacific coast.
The distance from Jacó to Juan Santamaría International Airport is approximately 86 kilometers, although travel time can vary considerably depending on traffic conditions along Route 27.
