From here, some of the best-known beaches in the North Pacific, national parks, volcanoes, and coastal towns are just a few hours away. And when you only have three to seven days to explore, that proximity makes a big difference.

For many routes in this region, a 4×4 is an excellent choice. Not because every road requires one, but because Guanacaste combines highways and paved roads with secondary access roads, rural roads, and destinations where conditions can change depending on the time of year.
A 4×4 is the recommended option for most itineraries in Costa Rica, offering greater flexibility and access to a wider range of destinations and road conditions. Sedan availability is very limited, so it should only be considered when available and if you plan to stay near Liberia, Papagayo, Tamarindo, or Flamingo and mainly use major roads.
Here are some of our recommendations for starting your trip from Liberia.
Papagayo: Make the Most of Your Vacation From Day One
If you only have three or four days, the Papagayo Peninsula is one of the easiest options. From Guanacaste Airport, the drive to this area can take approximately 30 to 40 minutes, depending on your accommodation and traffic conditions. This means you can pick up your vehicle after your flight and be close to the coast without spending half the day on the road.
Papagayo is ideal for travelers looking for beaches, relaxation, water activities, and resort-style accommodations. It also works very well as the first or last stop of a trip because it allows you to remain relatively close to the airport.
What Vehicle Do We Recommend for Papagayo?
If your itinerary is limited to the peninsula’s main access roads, a compact SUV can handle the trip perfectly well.
However, if you plan to combine Papagayo with other areas of Guanacaste, visit less developed beaches, or later travel toward Rincón de la Vieja or the Nicoya Peninsula, choosing a 4×4 from the start will allow you to keep the same vehicle throughout your trip.
Rincón de la Vieja: Trade the Beach for Volcanoes and Nature
Guanacaste has much more to offer than its coastline. Approximately one hour from Liberia is the Rincón de la Vieja National Park area, one of the best destinations for adding nature, hiking, and volcanic landscapes to a short trip. It is an excellent combination for travelers who want to spend a few days at the beach while also discovering the inland areas of the province.
One possible route could be: Liberia – Rincón de la Vieja – Papagayo or Flamingo. This allows you to begin with a mountain experience and finish your trip by the Pacific without spending too much time traveling between destinations.
For This Route, We Prefer a 4×4
When traveling toward rural areas or accommodations located away from the main routes, the height and capability of a 4×4 can be especially useful.
Road conditions can vary, particularly during the rainy season. Choosing a more capable vehicle from the airport means you will not have to limit your itinerary simply because of the type of road.
Flamingo and Conchal: Two Beaches That Pair Very Well
If you want to spend several days exploring the coast, Playa Flamingo is an excellent base. From Liberia, the drive usually takes around one hour, while Playa Conchal is relatively close by. This allows you to stay in one accommodation and take short trips during the day instead of constantly changing hotels.
From Flamingo, you can explore places such as Playa Conchal, Brasilito, Potrero, Tamarindo, and other beaches along Guanacaste’s coastal corridor. For a four- or five-day trip, this strategy can be much more efficient than trying to visit a different area every night.
A sedan may be sufficient for reaching the main tourist areas, but Guanacaste invites you to take detours. You may discover an interesting beach along the way, decide to visit a viewpoint, or change your itinerary after talking to someone local. In those situations, traveling in a 4×4 provides greater peace of mind and flexibility, especially if the road is no longer fully paved.

Tamarindo: A Practical Base for a First Trip to Guanacaste
Tamarindo is often one of the first options considered by travelers landing in Liberia, and for good reason. It is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from the airport under favorable conditions and combines beaches, restaurants, activities, surfing, and a convenient location for continuing to explore other parts of the coast.
For travelers visiting Costa Rica for the first time who only have three to five days, Tamarindo can work well as a main base. From there, you can take short trips to other beaches and return to the same accommodation at night. You can also consult websites such as www.tamarindoguide.com, which provide updated local information to give you more ideas about what to do during your trip.
A Simple Four-Day Route
If you want to keep your itinerary simple, you could organize it like this:
Day 1: Guanacaste Airport – Tamarindo
Day 2: Tamarindo and surrounding areas
Day 3: Conchal and Flamingo
Day 4: Return to Liberia
This route offers reasonable driving distances and enough flexibility to enjoy each destination.
Nosara: For Travelers With a Little More Time
With five, six, or seven days available, you can consider traveling farther south along the Nicoya Peninsula. Nosara offers a different experience from Tamarindo or Flamingo, with an atmosphere associated with surfing, wellness, nature, and a more relaxed pace.
The drive from Guanacaste Airport can take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the route and conditions. For that reason, we do not recommend treating Nosara as a day trip from Liberia. It makes much more sense to spend at least two nights there.
Some access roads on the Nicoya Peninsula may include gravel roads or surfaces that change considerably depending on the season. Therefore, if Nosara is part of your itinerary, our recommendation is to travel in an SUV or 4×4. In addition to making certain routes easier to navigate, it gives you greater flexibility to continue exploring if you decide to visit nearby beaches or communities.
Santa Teresa: Make the Journey Part of the Adventure
Santa Teresa frequently appears on travelers’ lists of places they want to visit in Costa Rica. But from Liberia, it needs to be approached differently.
It is not a destination “near the airport” in the same sense as Papagayo or Tamarindo. Depending on the route, traffic, and road conditions, the journey can take several hours.
For this reason, we recommend including Santa Teresa only when you have six or seven days and plan to spend several nights in the area. It is not worth driving all the way there only to return the following day.
This is one of the routes where choosing the right vehicle becomes much more important. Access roads on the Nicoya Peninsula can vary depending on the time of year, and a 4×4 offers greater capability for handling secondary roads and less consistent conditions. In addition, if you are already driving to Santa Teresa, you will probably want the freedom to explore Malpaís and other nearby areas.
What Should You Do if You Only Have 3 Days?
With three days, we recommend keeping your trip close to Liberia. A good combination would be:
Day 1: Arrive in Liberia and travel to Papagayo.
Day 2: Beach day or excursion to Rincón de la Vieja.
Day 3: Return to the airport.
You can also replace Papagayo with Flamingo if you prefer to explore several beaches. The goal should be to avoid long driving distances.
Recommendations for a 5-Day Trip
Five days allow you to explore a larger part of Guanacaste without spending too many hours driving. One route we like is:
Day 1: Liberia – Tamarindo
Day 2: Tamarindo
Day 3: Conchal and Flamingo
Day 4: Rincón de la Vieja
Day 5: Liberia
Another option is to use Flamingo as your base for several nights and explore nearby beaches from there. With this type of itinerary, having a rental car provides an excellent balance between comfort and freedom, especially if you have not yet decided exactly which beaches you want to visit.
Options for a 7-Day Trip
With a full week, you can begin considering the Nicoya Peninsula. For example:
Days 1 and 2: Tamarindo
Day 3: Flamingo and Conchal
Days 4, 5, and 6: Nosara
Day 7: Return to Liberia
If Santa Teresa is a priority, we recommend simplifying the itinerary even further. Instead of trying to visit Tamarindo, Flamingo, Nosara, and Santa Teresa in the same week, it is better to choose one or two main bases.
In Costa Rica, traveling fewer miles often means enjoying your trip much more.
What Type of Vehicle Should You Rent at Liberia Airport?
This is one of the most important decisions to make before beginning your trip.

- you plan to visit several destinations during the same trip;
- you want to explore beaches with secondary access roads;
- you are traveling during the rainy season;
- you prefer greater ground clearance and capability for different types of roads;
- you do not yet have a completely defined itinerary.
A 4×4 is not only useful for difficult roads. It also offers something especially valuable in Costa Rica: the ability to change your plans with greater freedom.
If you discover a beach, waterfall, or accommodation during your trip that requires taking a secondary road, having the right vehicle may allow you to take advantage of that opportunity.
