A good location for picking up a vehicle is not necessarily the one closest to the geographic center of a city. It is the one located close to where the traveler sleeps, works, eats, and connects with the road they will use afterward.

If your company arranged accommodations in Escazú, if you are on an extended stay, or if you decided to spend your first night in San José before starting a road trip, you will not necessarily have to travel to another part of the capital to get your vehicle.

Avenida Escazú is located next to the Próspero Fernández/Route 27 corridor. This highway connects San José with Caldera over approximately 76.8 kilometers and is one of the main exit routes from the Central Valley toward the Pacific.
In other words, if your next destination is to the west, picking up the vehicle in Escazú allows you to begin the trip from the side of the city in the direction you already need to travel.
That does not mean Route 27 is free of traffic. As with any major road in the Greater Metropolitan Area, travel times may increase during rush hour, on weekends, holidays, or when there are incidents on the road. The advantage is avoiding an additional trip toward central San José when that trip is not part of the itinerary.
For someone staying in Escazú or Santa Ana and then continuing toward the Pacific, that difference can significantly simplify leaving the capital.
Avoiding downtown San José when the itinerary does not require it
San José has cultural, historical, and culinary attractions that make it worth visiting. But if your accommodations, meetings, and onward route are all located to the west, crossing downtown solely to pick up a vehicle adds a step that may be unnecessary.

The answer does not always have to be “at the airport.”
If you arrive late and go directly to a hotel in Escazú, it may make sense to rest first and pick up the vehicle the next day. If you will spend several days in corporate meetings, you can rent it only when you actually need mobility. And if your trip begins in San José but continues toward the Pacific, Avenida Escazú places the pickup location close to the route you will use to leave the metropolitan area.

To better visualize the location, think of Avenida Escazú as a transition point between the metropolitan area and the routes heading west.
Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO): approximately 20–23 km
As a reference, AC Hotel San José Escazú—located within the development itself—places Juan Santamaría International Airport 19.4 km from the property. Other measurements from Escazú are around 23 km.
Actual travel time can vary considerably depending on traffic. For this reason, we always recommend checking real-time navigation and leaving enough extra time when heading to the airport for a flight.
Atenas: around 33 km
Atenas is approximately 33 km by road from Escazú, with driving times that may range from 30–40 minutes under favorable conditions.
Because of its location west of the Central Valley, it is a natural route for those continuing toward this area or using the Route 27 corridor.
Jacó: approximately 95 km
From Escazú to Jacó, the road distance is around 95 km. A driving estimate without significant congestion is about an hour and a half, although weekends and periods of high demand may extend the journey.
The connection to Route 27 makes Avenida Escazú an especially logical place to begin this drive toward the coast.
Manuel Antonio: approximately 165–170 km
To reach Manuel Antonio, it is advisable to calculate approximately 160–170 km and around three hours or more of travel time, depending on traffic, weather, and stops. The usual route continues toward the Pacific via Route 27 and then Route 34, known as the Costanera Sur.
Here, the advantage of starting in Escazú is even clearer; this is a journey of several hours, so eliminating unnecessary urban travel before joining the route can make the beginning of the trip much easier.
Important: these distances and travel times are planning references. In Costa Rica, rain, accidents, roadwork, rush hour, weekends, and holidays can significantly change the duration of a journey.
Who benefits most from renting a car in Avenida Escazú?
For the business traveler, it allows the vehicle to be picked up near hotels and corporate centers without having to rearrange the entire day’s schedule. It can be used to visit clients in different parts of the Greater Metropolitan Area or to begin a trip outside San José once meetings are finished.
For the tourist staying in western San José, it offers the possibility of separating the urban portion of the trip from the road trip portion. You can arrive in the country, rest, explore the area, and begin driving when you are truly ready to leave for your next destination.
For expats and long-stay visitors, a location in Escazú can be more convenient than repeatedly traveling to the airport. If you need a vehicle for a few days, are welcoming family members, or want to take a trip outside the city, you can begin the rental from an area integrated into your daily routine.
It is also a useful alternative for families. Organizing suitcases, children, and luggage from the hotel before picking up the vehicle is often more comfortable than transporting everything first to an office located in another part of the metropolitan area.
What vehicle should you pick up in Avenida Escazú?
The pickup location may be the same, but the vehicle should match the trip ahead.
If you will primarily be driving around San José, Escazú, Santa Ana, and other urban areas, a compact car offers easy maneuverability and efficiency. For family trips or itineraries with several suitcases, a category with more space may be more comfortable.
If your route includes mountainous areas, rural roads, or multiple destinations outside the main highways, it may be worth considering an SUV depending on the specific conditions of your itinerary.
